Simple Sourdough Bread Starter
Ingredients:
- 3 tablespoons of Instant Mashed Potato flakes (I used Idaho Buttery)
- 3 tablespoons of White sugar
- 1 cup warm water
- 2 1/4 teaspoons of active dry yeast (or one packet)
Directions:
Combine instant potatoes, sugar, water and yeast in a covered container with an air tight lid. Let the starter sit on the counter for 5 Days, stirring daily with a wooden spoon. It is important not to use a metal bowl or spoon because it will effect the yeast.
On the morning of the 5th day, you will feed your starter. You will add 3 tablespoons of the instant potato flakes, 3/4 a cup of sugar, and 1 cup of warm water. In the evening, you will take out 1 cup of the starter to use for your recipe and store the rest of the starter in the refrigerator.
You will still need to stir your starter daily with a wooden spoon and continue to feed it every five days! You will want to let your cup of starter rest at room temperature for six hours before use! If the starter is not going to be used, you will want to discard one cup after each feeding.
